Since the Lightning Project started, and particularly once progeny first became available, I’ve had countless inquiries about purchasing Lightning Maroon Clownfish direct from me.  In 2013 and 2014, all the offspring I had to offer were sold exclusively through Blue Zoo Aquatics and the team there. 2015 saw a dramatic uptick in production and availability from Sea & Reef Aquaculture; meanwhile for multiple reasons I don’t think I reared a single fish in 2015.

However, the holdback pair, MD1 and MD2, started spawning for my good friend Mike Doty, and thus, we’ve had F2 fish available as I announced late last year.  There are also very limited F1 Lighting Maroon offspring straight from the wild pair that I will make available.

To be frank, we’ve been offering these fish at wholesale to stores, but have had very limited interest, which is surprising since so many of the shops had been asking for them for so many years.  Furthermore, our breeding here in Duluth, MN, is currently the only production of high-coverage to all-white Lightning Maroon Offspring that I’m aware of, which means the shops and retailers that have wholesale accounts with us have access to very exclusive premium quality Lightning Maroons to ultra quality Lightning Maroon Clownfish that no one else can get!  These are the fish like the pair I held back; the entire bodies of these fish are expected to break up over time into the lace-like network of red spots.  And of course, we have plenty of more traditional type standard grade Lightning Maroon Clown offspring as well, and they’re not 100% related to the Sea & Reef bloodlines either.

When it comes right down to it, as breeders, we need to sell fish. And as much as I run and offered wholesale exclusively for the past few years to “support the LFS”, if the stores aren’t buying what we’re producing, yet we know you guys WANT them, we had to find another way.

Yes, a solid white juvenile like this is going to be covered in pattern in a couple years - Lightning Maroons like this for now only come from Duluth MN! Buy them at MiniWaters.FISH

So as of January 1st, 2016, I personally launched MiniWaters.FISH.  This is exclusive, direct from Matt Pedersen offerings of mostly captive-bred marine / saltwater fish (with the occasional freshwater offerings just to mix things up). Some fish are produced here, some produced by other breeders, and all carefully chosen to suit my own tastes first.  In short, I’m only going to intentionally stock fish that IF they never sell, I’ll be happy to call them pets for their rest of their lives!  If you like my tastes, then you’ll like what I’m offering.  If you want to buy Lightning Maroon Clownfish, well, for obvious reasons, this is the first place I’d suggest you look!

And I’m still offering wholesale to local shops; my retail pricing is such that any shop should be able to purchase from my wholesale list and, if they desire, undercut my online pricing while still making an industry-standard basic retail markup on livestock. See the MiniWaters.FISH wholesale page for more information – I’m STILL trying to “support the LFS”!

Customers in the upper midwest have an added bonus; residents of MN, WI, Northern IL and Northern IA can get overnight shipping for as little as $10!  Yes, MN retail customers, you get stuck with full Duluth city-rate sales tax..it is what it is…but shipping in the upper midwest is a screamin’ deal!

So please be sure to check out MiniWaters.FISH.  Please “like” the MiniWaters.FISH Facebook page too so you get updates.

I won’t be posting much in the way of “promoting sales” here on The Lightning Project per-say, as that’s not really the point of this website.  But, breeders need to sell their fish and aquarists need to buy them, so…wholesale or retail, drop me a line at MiniWaters.FISH and maybe I can send something your way!

LM20 was offered via the Blue Zoo Collector’s Choice for $999.95

Before I even had a chance to post it here on the Lighting Project, Lightning Maroon #20, aka LM20, was listed for $999.95 and sold via the Blue Zoo Collector’s Choice section of their website. This is likely the venue for at least the next few fish I release, which will remain drop shipped directly from Duluth, MN at this time. The best way to be notified of future offerings will be to get on the Blue Zoo Newsletter (subscribe on their homepage, left column) and watch the Lightning Maroon Clownfish Facebook Page.

4 more offspring up for bid in a Blue Zoo eBay auction.

4 more offspring up for bid in a Blue Zoo eBay auction.

Over the weekend, Blue Zoo started up 4 more eBay auctions for a few of the remaining fish I have to offer this summer.  These include the last 3 available fish from the June 29th, 2012 hatch; WS11, WS4, and LM11. LM19 is from spawn #14, the 10-24-2013 hatch, and is one of the best offspring I’ve raised to date (in my opinion). It is also a small fish at 1.5″, and would make an solid male in a pairing with a larger fish (of course, this is not without risks in trying to establish a pair).

>>>>> Just 2-3 days left to BID! <<<<<

This leaves only WS17 and LM20 for possible future auctions this summer if we so choose; I won’t have more fish at saleable size until fall or winter of this year.

*UPDATE* – Also, I should note, that Blue Zoo denoted LM19 as “best for last” in the auctions – we had been planning to keep LM19 for the last, but perhaps the wrong auction got made live or Blue Zoo changed the order but forgot to change the description.  So, as far as I know, it’s the “2nd to last”…

After that, a look at the 6 fish that remain for the Summer 2014 crop (after which, there won’t be any more to offer until fall or winter)!

What’s left for summer 2014?  Not much, so start hatching your plans.

Still to come, includes 2 large White Stripes, 1 small White Stripe, 1 Large Lightning Maroon, 2 small Lightning Maroons.  So, again, plan appropriately! Still to be auctioned this summer (and probably very soon):

LM9 - the first Lightning Maroon Clownfish to be offered at auction for 2014.

LM9 – the first Lightning Maroon Clownfish to be offered at auction for 2014.

As of the evening of 6/17/2014, Blue Zoo Aquatics has once again launched a series of Lightning Maroon Clownfish auctions; here’s what they had to say about the latest round:

“Summer is here and it’s time for the next wave of Lightning Maroon Clownfish to hit the market. It’s been about 6 months since the last wave hit and these truly remarkable fish from Matt’s first and second spawnings are ready to ship to their new homes.

After nearly 3 years of toil, trouble and extreme dedication, breeder Matt Pedersen is proud to offer to the US market the next batch of these truly remarkable fish. For those discovering this amazing animal for the first time, please click HERE to familiarize yourself with the extraordinary journey that has taken place to bring these fish to market.

These next 5 will be auctioned off in 3 individual fish eBay listings. The last two in this wave will be sold as a bonded pair.

Each listing in each wave will be staggered by about 12 hours to give everybody the best chance to obtain one of these remarkable fish. Four of these fish, including both fish from the bonded pair, display the striking lightning pattern similar to their mother while one of these fish look similar to a normal patterned maroon clownfish except for distinctive jagged striping and the odd white dot in different places. This sibling is the only PNG bloodline maroon clownfish on the market and the best bet for continued breeding and development of the lightning pattern [Note, Blue Zoo may have reused information from past auctions here - Sea & Reef's Morse Code Maroons, released spring 2014, are F1 PNG bloodlines as well]. Matt has more information about this on his website, http://www.lightning-maroon-clownfish.com so be sure to check it out.”

The first auctioned fish, LM9, is already up for bids. And for those who’ve been following my updates, it’s not hard to figure out which fish will be sold as the “Bonded Pair” (ok, it’s LM17 with LM18 - UPDATE #3 – they are now at auction too).  I’ll keep the identies of the last two fish secret for now [UPDATED - LM14 is now also up for bid! - UPDATE #2 - WS13 is also now up for bid!], but you know you can rule out MWP3, as that fish has been donated to the MBI Workshop Raffle this year!

First, I must go back to 5/25/2014, Sunday night, when I discovered that spawn #33 had been laid.  So hatch should come this Saturday night.

Many people have asked when the next Lightning Maroon Clownfish will be sold.  You may recall last fall that Blue Zoo stated they were going to auction 6, but then only auctioned 3. In short, weather in Duluth got brutally cold and never let up, meaning we never could safely ship.  We had snow on the ground well into MAY this year…60+ days of temps that never made it ABOVE 0F.   In short, Blue Zoo Aquatics is ready to auction more Lightning Maroons.  It is currently me, at the moment, holding up the process (I need to get them the materials). Either way, it’s time to be on alert, and to start watching newsletters and emails and eBay.  I presume as soon as I get my butt in gear, Blue Zoo will be offering them up.

On a whim I checked eBay tonight, and there it was, the first auction of the next 6 fish to be sold by Blue Zoo Aquatics.  They have kicked things off with Lightning Maroon #5 (LM5) – here’s a link to the LM5 Lightning Maroon Clownfish auction on eBay.

From reading the auction description, it sounds like Blue Zoo will be offering 3 fish now (not sure which three) and three fish after the Thanksgiving holiday, but well before Christmas.  This will leave roughly 4 fish here yet to be sold, retained as backups should anything go awry with winter shipping. All of the Lightning Maroon offspring on hand were recently updated with new photos in the inventory.

If all goes well (and it should) then those last 4 will probably be sold in early 2014, with more babies (presumably mainly from spawns #14 and #15) to come by late spring at the earliest. Definitely not getting hundreds or thousands of these fish, which means that until some of my supportive winners get their pairs going, it’s going to be a very limited variant for the near future.

After a LONG day of bagging on Monday, today went surprisingly easy as reports trickled in from the high bidders on the round 3 fish.  As I type this now at 11 PM, all recipients have reported in that the fish arrived alive and in great shape.  Several compliments on the packing came in as well (I’m packing these fish per direct instructions from Mark Martin at Blue Zoo, and the packaging design seems to be very effective for such precious cargo).

Last night I moved all the remaining fish out of the grow-out system and into the individual cubes; at some point this week I hope to take the updated photos and determine which fish go in the next round.  I’m guessing a round of 5-6 fish.  I’ve told some people this already, but I’ll put it out there in the usual spirit of transparency associated with The Lightning Project.  My aim is to hold back the best last two fish; these will be the final auction IF it comes to that.  Blue Zoo and I have of course stood behind these fish arriving alive, and part of that guarantee has been that if there was a problem with a fish, we would invite the winning bidder to select another fish from the inventory of comparable quality -or- simply refund the money; buyers choice.  As we draw to a close, it’s tough to make that same offer, so any losses seen with this next group will need to have a fish that I feel is as good, if not superior to, any of the fish in the round….thus, I will be saving the best for last.  Presuming all fish from the next round make it well, it will leave 2 fish left for a last final round, 1 White Stripe and 1 Lightning, to which I will not have any replacements to offer.

Once those auctions are done, it will not be until winter/spring of 2014 before we can even hope to see more lightnings ready for market.  Spawn #12 is going well so far, eating me out rotifers, and as of today, 9-24-2013, Spawn #13 was thrown down!

Blue Zoo Aquatics has listed the next 8 offspring from the Lightning Maroon Clownfish, dubbed the “Amazing 8″. The auction is live on eBay at this time – you can view all the auctions quickly via Blue Zoo Aquatics’ eBay items listing.

The first auction started Saturday night, 9/14/2013, with LM7.  As of this evening, 7 of the 8 are up, with the last fish, LM12, due to start the morning of 9/18/2013 (just a few hours from now).

LM12 - the last fish to be listed for the Round 3 Auctions

LM12 – the last fish to be listed for the Round 3 Auctions, listing the morning of 9/18/13

Here’s a snapshot of the auctions this very early morning at around 3 AM central time:

LM7 – currently $660.00

WS9 – currently $102.50

WS15 – currently $100.00

LM3 – currently $660.00

WS6 – currently $202.50

WS16 – currently $5.50

WS14 – currently $0.99!

LM12 -to be listed soon…

The other interesting part I have to mention is that this group will remove a large portion of the remaining offspring I’ll have available to sell.  10 fish in the inventory remain, although I have two more Lightning holdbacks I could opt to part with or might use for other purposes, and if all goes well the one sole survivor of Spawn #10, a baby lightning, could play a future role here too.

Fish that will likely be in some future auctions include WS4, WS7, LM6. LM9, WS11, LM11, WS13, LM13, LM14, LM17.

I should point out that if you want a white stripe offspring, there won’t be many chances left and you might want to secure your fish this time.  I may need to select one or two of the remaining four for my own breeding purposes; either way after round #3, there simply wont’ be much left in the way of White Stripe siblings (I still believe that the most promising pairing to produce more Lightning Maroons will be a Lightning crossed with it’s White Stripe sibling, which I think will yield 50/50 results just like their parents).
